Born in Guatemala in Central America in 1950, Roberto Godoy has been living in Montréal since 1984. An architect and anthropologist by profession, he has explored painting and printmaking since he was in his teens.
Roberto devoted the year 2002-2003 to printmaking and engraving, honing various printmaking techniques (lithography, intaglio, photo-engraving, digital printmaking) at Atelier Graff and Atelier Circulaire in Montréal. He has been a member of Atelier Circulaire since 2003.
Deeply affected by the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East and the mass exodus of people trying to get to Europe by land or sea, Roberto (aka El PoPy) has created a number of prints inspired by the Syrian war. He sees no end in sight to this war – not because an end is militarily impossible, but because the war is far too lucrative for business.
