you ask the whooping crane
with its white plumage, crimson cap
to be forgiven
by loud rattling bugling calls
you ask to be forgiven
by Old French pais, meaning “peace”
you ask the boreal forests
named after Boreas, the Greek god
of the north wind
and the bringer of winter and ice
you ask to be forgiven
by loud rattling bugling calls
loss of habitat and blue crab
you ask to be forgiven

tanka

there was so little colour
that you took these photos
of the north wind
greyscale whooping cranes
where the boreal forests
