THE ART OF LOUIS HUGHES

LOUIS HUGHES was born in Montreal, Canada in 1958. An award winning painter with a growing international reputation, he has been exhibiting mainly in Quebec since 1990. His works are also found in private collections in Canada, Great Britain, France, Holland and USA.

Hughes' art has been informed by a long stay in the Great North, where he first encountered the mysteries of the northern light and Inuit art. Following the example of Motherwell and Riopelle, his leitmotifs originate in the subconscious. In trying to grapple with and lay bare the dualities of isolation and the incertitudes of ambient emptiness, his canvases lose none of their spontaneity and magic, and are highly allusive; featuring arcane symbols, illegible script, and vestiges of the ancestral worlds.

"For me, each painting stands still in time and is a part of my personal quest for a true Self. I am in search of life’s pleasures ... of my own Truth ... my Grail in some way."

"Sometimes the wind erases everything, the horizon, the village that was there . . . where the wind blows and makes up its own rules, what is space and time?"
