“Between States”: a Must-See Photography Exhibition

Mahmoud Jaballah

For the last 18 months, Montreal photographer and social justice activist Darren Ell has been photographing and interviewing individuals and families working with the Montreal activist network Solidarity Across Borders: people facing deportation or living in sanctuary, non-status people caught in the limbo of Immigration Canada or men imprisoned without charge under Security Certificate legislation. Darren’s interviews and life-size portraits will be presented in a high-profile exhibition for four weeks beginning on October 12 th at Dazibao, centre de photographies actuelles at 4001 Berri Street. The exhibition, entitled “Between State,” allows the public to learn about the struggles of refugees who have fled their native lands only to face injustice at the hands of Canadian authorities. “Between States” presents the stories, images and voices of some of the tens of thousands in Canada who struggle daily for a just life. The exhibition will open at 7 pm on October 12 th, and will be preceded by an interactive conference at 6 pm featuring: Sophie Harkat, wife of Security Certificate detainee Mohamed Harkat; Solidarity Across Borders representative Sarita Ahooja; Colombian activist and academic Lilio Solano and others. Don’t miss this beautiful and educational show, a tribute to those who struggle for justice and work in solidarity. Darren can be reached at darren.e@sympatico.ca and his work can be seen at www.darrenell.com
